What Is Black Dandyism?
Black dandyism is the subversive and sophisticated reimagining of fashion by Black men and women who, historically denied power and presence, claimed visibility and self-worth through impeccable dress. From the 18th century to the Harlem Renaissance and into today’s streetwear icons, Black dandies have used tailoring and style as a means of cultural expression and political resistance.
Influenced by Monica L. Miller’s groundbreaking 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the concept explores how sartorial excellence became a language of pride, defiance, and transformation for Black communities according to Vogue.
