Name: Sheldon Adelson

Net worth: Approx. $30 billion

Company: Las Vegas Sands

Bio: Sheldon Adelson showed an affinity for business at a young age, when he sold newspapers at the age of 12. Over the years, he worked several jobs, including financial consultant, investment advisor and mortgage broker.

Adelson purchased the Sands Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas in 1989, and the following year, he and his partners constructed the Sands Expo and Convention Centre, the only privately owned and operated convention centre in the US at the time.

The Las Vegas Sands Group, of which he is CEO, has several resorts in America and Asia including The Venetian (which replaced the Sands Hotel) and The Palazzo on the Las Vegas Strip.

Adelson and his wife were awarded the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship by the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars of the Smithsonian Institution in 2008. He also received the Chairman’s Award from the Nevada Policy Research Institute for his work to advance free market principles in Nevada.

Adelson was named on CNBC‘s list of 200 people who have transformed business over the last 25 years in 2014. The list consisted of “top leaders, icons and rebels, a definitive list of people who have had the greatest influence, sparked the biggest changes and caused the most disruption in business over the past quarter century.”

CEO Fact: The historic Sands Hotel and Casino operated from 1952 to 1996 and was the past haunt of Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack. The building was shut down and demolished after Adelson became its last owner, building The Venetian in its place.
