Bio:  In 1983, Glasenburg earned his MBA from the University of Southern California.

He began his career at Glencore in the coal department in 1984. From 1989 to 1990 he managed the Hong Kong and Beijing offices, became head of the company’s coal department in 1991, and then was named CEO in 2002.



Glasenberg became CEO of the mergered entity that was created when Glencore and Xstrata combined, completing one of the largest mining company mergers in history. As a result of the merger Glencore Xstrata became a US$88 billion company.

Glasenburg first became a billionaire when Glencore went public in 2011.  He owns the biggest private stake of the company at 8.4%.

CEO Fact: Glasenburg is a keen athlete and in his early twenties became the South African (and Israeli) junior champion in race walking.
