Terror Attack at Turkish Aerospace Company in Ankara Leaves Several Dead and Injured

A deadly terror attack has struck the headquarters of Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) in Ankara, one of Turkey's leading defense and aerospace companies. The attack has left several people dead and numerous others injured, according to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Yerlikaya confirmed that the assailants targeted the TUSAS facilities located in Kahramankazan, a district in the Turkish capital. While security forces swiftly intervened, the attack resulted in three deaths and left 14 people injured. Two of the attackers were killed during the operation.

Details of the Attack

Local media reported that a group of attackers arrived at the TUSAS complex in a taxi during a shift change, allowing them to bypass some security measures. One attacker reportedly detonated a bomb at the entrance while others infiltrated the complex.

Footage from CCTV, aired by local television stations, showed at least one male assailant carrying an assault rifle and a backpack. Another attacker, believed to be a woman, was also seen armed with an assault rifle.

Eyewitnesses captured videos of the incident, showing large explosions, gunfire, and people scrambling for safety. One video, filmed from a car park, shows onlookers watching as dust and debris filled the air following the explosion.

Immediate Response and Aftermath

Security forces, ambulances, and firefighters quickly responded to the scene. Emergency services worked to secure the area and safely evacuate employees, with local news outlets confirming that staff were taken to safe zones within the complex. There were unconfirmed reports of potential hostage situations, and gunfire continued for some time following the initial explosion.

TUSAS, which plays a critical role in Turkey's defense industry, is known for producing KAAN, the country’s first national combat aircraft, alongside various other military and civilian aerospace projects. The company is instrumental in Turkey’s defense strategy, making it a symbolic and strategic target.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet identified the group responsible for the attack. Turkey has been targeted by various groups in the past, including Kurdish militants, Islamic State extremists, and leftist radical groups. The investigation is ongoing, with Turkish security forces working to determine the motive and affiliations of the attackers.

Global Reactions

International leaders expressed solidarity with Turkey in the wake of the attack. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte issued a statement condemning the attack, stating, "NATO stands with our ally Turkey. We strongly condemn terrorism in all its forms and are monitoring developments closely."

The Importance of TUSAS

TUSAS is a key player in Turkey’s defense and aerospace sectors, designing, manufacturing, and assembling civilian and military aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and space systems. The company is crucial in developing Turkey’s technological capabilities in both national defense and space exploration.

The terror attack on Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) in Ankara is a tragic reminder of ongoing security threats faced by the country. As investigations continue, Turkey's defense sector, especially TUSAS, will likely increase security measures to prevent future incidents. The global community has expressed strong support for Turkey as the nation seeks to recover from this devastating attack.
