We have found 5 chefs who have won awards, shown true dedication to their craft and who have come to success recently and quickly.

A chef's talent cannot go unrecognised with the long hours in a hot kitchen or researching new dishes or working to produce the very best.

 

Ash Valenzuela-Heeger

Her restaurant, Riverine Rabbit located in Birmingham pays tribute to her South African background where she began her culinary experience as well as setting up the Riverine Rabbit restaurant in Cape Town before relocating to the UK.

Ash began working in restaurant at 16 washing the dishes and worked her way up through the ranks from internships and learning from other chefs.

Riverine Rabbit offers a set menu on Mondays and small plates on other nights offering a taste of South Africa through locally sourced British produce.

The restaurant was added to the Michelin guide in April, only 3 months after the launch.

 

Abby Lee

Abby Lee opened her restaurant, Mambrow in 2020 located in London before Covid forced it to close. This allowed Lee to refocus before reopening with a new goal to offer a Malaysian inspired menu.

Mambrow is an open kitchen concept with modern Malaysian plates, honouring Lee’s own heritage.

Time Out magazine named Mambrow as the best restaurant in London.

 

Nelson Freitas

Winner of the Best Young Chef in the World through San Pellegrino awards in 2023. A competition in which young chefs come to impress a panel of judges with their creations.

Nelson Freitas worked in Fifty Seconds restaurant in Lisbon Portugal. Freitas utilised his experience and his knowledge of the Iberian cuisine to win that year’s competition.

After winning, he went on to be mentored in Peru by other acclaimed chefs.

 

Masako Morishita

Winner of the James Beard Awards for Best Emerging Chef.

Bringing Japanese comfort food to Washington DC at Perry’s restaurant, Morishita works to offer the US a cuisine she believes is lacking recognition.

Food which Japanese mother’s have been cooking for families, Morishita states as her signature dishes include, miso butter clams and garlic edamame dumplings.

Morishita sparks plans of a cookbook in the future and perhaps her own restaurant but for now is happy with her staff at Perry’s.

 

Sebastian White

Nominated as a ‘Chef to watch in 2024’ is Sebastian White, located in Chicago and focusing on more than just making food in the kitchen.

Sebastain White is the founder of The Evolved Kitchen, a youth programme to help and encourage kids from oppressed communities. Sebastian uses food education to harness their creativity allowing them to experiment and gain skills.

He also focuses on farmers and food produce as a large part of the cooking experience.
