On Wednesday, Elon Musk caused a stir by tweeting that he was purchasing English football club Manchester United. Later, the Tesla billionaire tweeted again, informing his followers that it was a joke.

Early Wednesday, Musk tweeted about his political affiliations and then added in a second tweet: "Also, I'm buying Manchester United ur welcome."

The club’s owners, the Glazer family, have been heavily criticised by fans for the team's underachievement in recent years, leading some to believe that the purchase by Musk may have been genuine.

However, when a follower questioned whether Musk was serious, the billionaire tweeted, "No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I'm not buying any sports teams."

Musk’s joke comes as he faces a large legal battle in the US after attempting to walk away from a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter.
