American novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated $2.7 billion to 286 charitable organisations. Turning to her blog, Scott said she wanted to give the money to neglected and marginalised groups: “Because community-centered service is such a powerful catalyst and multiplier, we spent the first quarter of 2021 identifying and evaluating equity-oriented non-profit teams working in areas that have been neglected. The result was $2,739,000,000 in gifts to 286 high-impact organisations in categories and communities that have been historically underfunded and overlooked.” Amongst the many recipients are the African Leadership Group, Memphis Music Initiative, New City Kids, Repair the World, The Greenlining Institute, and Women’s Funding Network.
Scott is one of the richest women in the world, with an estimated fortune of $59.5 billion following her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2019.
