How to Protect Your Stuff While Travelling

If you're heading abroad, know how to keep your valuables safe and secure.

When planning a trip, there’s a whole lot of time that goes into packing. You end up shopping for the perfect outfits, taking jewelry that will compliment your looks and valuable items that you’ll need on your trip. You’ll be carrying extra cash, credit cards and maybe even expensive camera gear. After all, you do need to look your absolute best for the millions of pictures you’ll be taking. So, how do you ensure that your luggage arrives safe and sound, in one piece and that your valuables are protected during your trip?

Choose your luggage wisely

The first thing to consider is your suitcase. Choosing the right luggage that protects your belongings and doesn’t get torn or broken is vital. With many different options available, it can be difficult to choose, but more often than not, hardside luggage tends to be your best bet. Not only does it prevent rapture and tearing, but it also offers better support and protects your belongings from being ruined. While soft luggage is easier to pack more items into, they do not offer the same support, and garments can be easily damaged or broken.

Don’t keep all your valuables in the same place

This is one of the things most people have learned the hard way. When placing all your money in the same bag and having it stolen or lost, you are left with absolutely nothing! To avoid this, you should divide the things you care about the most to more than one safe spot and always keep your eyes on them. Oh, and pretty please take anything you care about on the plane with you rather than keep them in the checked-in bag which you will not have access to over the period of the flight.

Lock your bags

How would you feel if you reached your destination, only to find your bag has been opened and your expensive make-up bag or camera has been stolen? Even if it’s your favorite pair of shoes, you’ll be devastated if someone has access to whatever is in your suitcase. That’s why it is essential to lock your bags and keep them safe, but please don’t buy the locks from a cheap store where the keys are the same and can access pretty much any lock.

Carry your backpack in front

Most of the time during your travels, the backpack you’re carrying has the items you care about most. You know that, we know that, and pickpockets know that, too. When carrying it on your back, you deny yourself the ability to see if someone is trying to access it. It is very difficult to feel a light hand open the zipper and grab whatever it is you’re hiding inside. Your wallet, passport, or money can be at stake, and that’s not the kind of thing you want to be facing on a trip. To ensure the safety of your belongings, carry your backpack in front and hold on to it for dear life when someone tries to initiate any form of conversation.

Better to be safe than sorry

Always assume the worst that could happen and plan accordingly. Even if that means paying a little extra or investing in items that will protect your belongings, you’ll find that it is totally worth it. Whatever it takes, enjoy your trip, stress-free without having to worry about the safety of your items.
