He subsequently praised Microsoft CFO Amy Hood for her key role in strategising said growth and transformation from within. In 2019, Nadella also succeeded in beating Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos to a gigantic $10 billion US Government contract for cloud services, establishing Microsoft’s dominance in the cloud sphere. ABOUT SATYA NADELLA In 1988, Satya Nadella attained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in electrical engineering from Manipal Institute of Technology before travelling to the US to study for a Master of Science in Computer Science which he obtained in 1990 from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. He later received his MBA degree from the University of Chicago. Nadella was appointed the new CEO of Microsoft in 2014 – he is the 3rd CEO in the company’s history. Before that, he was Executive Vice President of Microsoft’s cloud and enterprise group. His other previous roles include President of the Server & Tools Division, Vice-President of the Business Division and Corporate Vice-President of Business Solutions and Search & Advertising Platform Group. Bezos did however quickly reclaim his ongoing title. Throughout 2019 Bezos has also helped the retail and tech giant achieve further growth, through strategic spending and M&A. The impact has been an overall loss in profits this last quarter ($2.1 billion in profit, down 28 % YoY), but significant growth in sales ($70 billion in sales, up 24% YoY). ABOUT JEFF BEZOS As a child, Jeff Bezos showed an early interest in how things work—reportedly dismantling his crib as a toddler in order to rebuild it as a bed and turning his parents’ garage into a laboratory. He pursued his interest in computers at Princeton University, where he graduated in 1986 with a degree in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. According to Forbes, Bezos was listed in January 2018 as the wealthiest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $108.1 billion. In 2014, he was ranked the best-performing CEO in the world by Harvard Business Review. At his current rate of success, it is expected that Bezos will become a trillionaire in the next 25 years.
